Set in the 1950s, the film stars an ensemble cast of Anushka Sharma, Priyanka Chopra, Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar, R. Madhavan, Esha Gupta and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Deviating from the original concept, the film is a modern adaptation of the classic Indian novel Hindustani by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, which revolves around two children, played by Sharma and Chopra, who fall in love with each other and their families do not accept their relationship. With a romantic story and several aspects of youth, the film has a coming-of-age storyline, which showcases the lives of its characters in the 1950s. The screenplay, dialogue, and cinematography were also adapted from the novel. Principal photography began in 2010, and the film was released worldwide on 21 October 2012. Upon release, the film received mixed reviews from critics and was praised for the screenplay, acting, and soundtrack, but received negative feedback for its clichéd plot. Nevertheless, it became a commercial success, grossing over $1.7 million worldwide. It was nominated in several categories at the 58th Filmfare Awards.
